What the Data Is — and Is Not
The figures on PlainRetire are drawn from Form 5500 annual reports filed with the U.S. Department of Labor. A Form 5500 describes an entire employer-sponsored plan at a single point in time. It is not a statement of your individual account balance, your accrued benefit, or the security of your retirement income. Headline numbers such as total assets, net income, and participant counts reflect a one-year snapshot and can change materially with markets, plan mergers, and workforce changes. "Net income" in particular blends investment performance with contribution and distribution flows and does not by itself indicate a plan's health or your outcomes.
Smaller plans (generally under 100 participants) file simplified schedules and are exempt from independent audit, so some figures rest on plan-sponsor attestation rather than auditor confirmation. Government plans (federal, state, and local) are generally not required to file Form 5500 and are not represented here.
Accuracy & Timeliness
We work to present Form 5500 data faithfully and to fix errors at their source (see our editorial & corrections policy), but we make no warranty that every figure is complete, current, or free of error. Filings can be amended, and our copy of the data reflects a particular release. Always verify a specific figure against the underlying filing in the DOL EFAST2 system before relying on it.
